What is agate? What sets it apart?

Agate stones, formed in volcanic rocks, are a microcrystalline variety of quartz. Probably due to this addition, these minerals are adorned with characteristic bands in various colors.

What else sets agates apart? On the Mohs scale, these stones have 6.5 to 7 points out of 10, meaning they are hard and durable. In this respect, they surpass diamonds and sapphires.
